NYJ 2008 Outlook - Defensive Backs

Well, now I know why NYFAN told me to do the defensive backs because there is seventeen of them, anyway I have decided to embark on this tough task and I hope you enjoy the final part of the NYJ 2008 Outlooks.

CB, David Barrett: Barrett first began his path to the NFL with the Arizona Razorbacks accumulating during his college years, 176 tackles, 7 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles and 5 sacks. Afterwards he declared himself for the 2000 draft (same year as Pennington and Ellis) and was drafted by his home town the Arizona Cardinals.

As a rookie he had a slow start but gradually pulled up his numbers and by the time he joined the Jets in 04' his numbers had really shot up. Since becoming a Jet overall he has gotten 444 tackles and 17 INT. He had 63 tackles last year (his third highest of his career) with only one INT. Barrett seems to be putting up fine stats and I expect him to stick around for another few years and help rookies like Dwight Lowery while doing some of his own work.

SS, Darnell Bing: Bing although not well known in the league in general is fairly new to action; his college career got off to a rocky start after he was declared academically ineligable but, then the rest of his college career you could call golden; Here are some of the awards he recieved or has been nominated for during his college years ....

  • Honorable mention All- Pac-10 (2003)
  • Sporting News Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (2003)
  • Sporting News Freshman All-American (2003)
  • Second-team All-Pac-10 (2004)
  • First-team All-Pac-10 (2005)
  • First-team AP All-American (2005)
  • Jim Thorpe Award semifinalit (2005)
  • Lott Trophy quarterfinalist (2005)

I suppose it is also appropriate to mention that he intercepted a pass in the final minutes of the game against Fresno State that sealed the win for the Trojans. He was a draftee of the 06' class and was taken by the Oakland Raiders where he spent his time on the practice squad and spent last season with the 49ers on the practice squad. As of now the Jets recieved him this year and he is on the current roster. Judging his college career I believe Darnell could be a good safety but he hasn't been given a chance to show us what he can do, hopefully the Jets will give him that chance and we'll see him active this season.

S, Étienne Boulay: Boulay played for New Hampshire while in college he accumulated recorded 223 tackles, 13 INTs and 27 PD. He was drafted into the CFL by the Montreal Alouettes and in two season with Montreal he finished with 41 tackles -- 23 solo -- and five interceptions.

Judging Boulay on his college and CFL years I believe he'll make a fine addition to the team of course he'll probably battle with the other safeties to see where he'll stand wheather as backup, starter or more backup. I would think the Jets would give him a shot considering he put up pretty good stats but, I can't see him doing a lot this season.

CB, Drew Coleman: Before the NFL after transferring from Trinity Valley Community College following the 2003 season, Coleman played his final two seasons at TCU, where he posted 49 tackles and five INTs for the Horned Frogs. He was drafted by New York in the 2006 draft; he played in all 17 games (playoff apperance) and developed into a solid special teams tackler. He began to make a name for himself when he had a key forced fumble against the New England Patriots on the first game of the Jets 07 season.

In 2007 he was a regular on special teams and later in the season was included in some defensive packages for the Jets, including getting his first INT vs the Miami Dolphins on December 2nd 2007 and forcing a fumble during a sack on the last game of the Jets 07' season vs. Kansas City Chiefs QB, Brodie Croyle. Coleman seems to be working his way out of a shell and developing into a good NFL player although most of the attention was on Revis last year, Coleman should be a good keeper for New York.

SS, Abram Elam: Elam was signed by the Dolphins in 05' as an undrafted free agent but later waived. Then in 2006 the Cowboys signed him only to be waived again in 2007. This past season he finally found home when he came to New York and with two brothers and one sister shot to death it is amazing to see how well he has handled himself. Elam made his debut in week one of the 06' season recording 15 ST tackles and returned four KOs 95 yards in 15 games.

Abram joined New York making his first NFL start and led Jets with 10 tackles in Week 7 at Cincinatti and made 53 total tackles last year. I expect Elam to be sticking around for a while since he has a pretty solid foundation for sticking around long enough to prove himself, I see Elam putting up pretty much most of the same numbers as last year.

S, Atrell Hawkins: Before the NFL Hawkins finished his college career at the University of Cincinnati with 139 tackles, four INTs, 32 PDs, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 41 games (27 starts). Atrell was drafted by the Bengals in the 98' draft and logged his first career sack and FF on same strip-sack of Eric Zeier in Week 4 at Baltimore and seemed to prosper in Cincinatti while he was there. After a long run with the Bengals he was bought to the Panthers where after a year signed with the Patriots.

He didn't play during 2007 and now has made his way to the Jets where he carries with him an NFL Vet status along with 122 career games with 92 starts and 17 individual takeaways - 11 INTs and six fumble recoveries. Although not seeing any action since 2007, I expect Hawkins to play very well this season and I suspect he'll see hhis share of a role during the upcoming season but also expect a Mangini slow fade in unless Mangini is playing some cards we don't know about (and truthfully when isn't Mangini?).

S, James Ihedigbo: Ihedigbo was a former walk-on turned three-year starter at UMass and served as Minutemen captain his senior season and recorded 251 tackles (165 solo), 12.5 sacks, 8 INT and 19 PD in his college career. Even with impressive college stats James hasn't seem much of a role after signing with New york going undrafted in the 2007 draft, in fact he hasn't played once in the NFL as of yet.

And with the whole Mangini slow fade in I'm beginning to wonder if this will happen to guys like Vernon Gholston ... Anyway I hope to see Ihedigbo on the field this year becuase if put up such great stats in college I can't wait to see what he can do in the NFL.

CB, Dwight Lowery: During his college days, Dwight orginally played college ball at Cabrillo College before transferring to San Jose and left there with 13 picks in 15 games. He also led the state in return yards that same year. Lowery was a two time All-America selection AFCA and FWAA All-America cornerback for San José State University. Lowery led the nation in 2006 with 9 interceptions. In his senior season at San Jose State University Lowery recorded 4 interceptions and 7 broken up passes to go along with 44 tackles. Lowery was named to the all-WAC team in 2007.

I expect Lowery to be another CB who can make an impact this season and if he and Revis and Coleman and Zenon can make things happy the Jets won't have to worry about cornerback for a while; but still I expect a slow Mangini fade in unless Mangini wants to pair him with Revis and see how they mesh.

S, Nate Lyles: Lyles went an undrafted free agent in this year's 08' draft and was picked up by the Jets. He made a successful comeback in 2006 after suffering a neck injury in 2005 and is also know for his hard hitting style of play and finished the season with 46 tackles and 2 sacks. If his stats don't look impressive then maybe his hard hitting makes up for it. Lyles seems to be a player that the Jets need around the organization and if he splits time with Kerry Rhodes they could both be punishing, I expect a limited role from him though provided Mangini and the Jets don't give him the boot (although with a hard hitter, he might come in handy against the Patriots *cough, cough*.

CB/KR: Justin Miller: Justin Miller can be added to one of the best picks the Jets made in the later rounds of the draft (which they are known for). Miller although out all last season made a great impression during his rookie season compiling 1,577 yards with a 26.3 yard average along with a touchdown as a kick returner. In 2006 was when Miller made his biggest impact, he was selected to the Pro Bowl that very same year because of his 103 yard performance when returning a kick by Martin Gramatica and was tied with Devin Hester for the most kick return TD's in the league.

Unfortunatly he was placed on IR due to a knee injury ending his season but, I expect to see Miller back and better than ever even with the surgery, and with Leon Washington back there, those two will be dangerous for other teams.

CB, Hank Poteat: You could say Poteat has bounced like a rubber ball from team to team until 2006 though. Before having his shot at the NFL, Poteat finished his Pittsburgh career with 136 tackles, 10 INTs, school-record 1,917 KR yards, 90 rushing yards and 54 receiving yards. Then in 2000 he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he played there for three years and began to take little steps. He then went to play for Tampa in 2003 which only lasted a year and only appeared in one game. His next stop was New England where he played for them until 2006.

Poteat finally got some more attention when he came to New York where he has seemed to find a permenant home with and last year he made 37 tackles and made his first two INT of his career. I don't expect Poteat around too much longer as he is getting older in age however I do believe he will see a good role this season but, I can't see him as part of the future CB package.

CB, Darrelle Revis: Before the NFL, Darrelle played QB, DB, WR, CB and KR at Aliquippa (PA) HS, where he was named AP Pennsylvania Class AA Player of the Year and was Class AA all-state first-team selection as senior. His 73-yard PR touchdown vs. West Virginia, during which he fielded punt on bounce, cut across entire field, then weaved past several potential tacklers down sideline, was selected 2006 "College Football Play of the Year" by ESPN and finished his three-year career at University of Pittsburgh with 129 tackles, 8 INTs and 4 TDs - two via PR and two via INT.

Upon Revis entering the NFL, he was immediatly started at CB which isn't easy for most rookies and there were some ups and downs for Revis however he really impressed his rookie season and the fact he got 87 tackles and 3 INT also helped too. I expect Revis to continue his great playing for a long time to come and turn into one of the Jets best corners.

FS: Kerry Rhodes: Before arriving in the NFL via the 2005 draft (chosen by New York), Rhodes played in 44 games and made 19 starts in four-year career at Louisville, finishing with 218 tackles, one sack, 11 INT, 19 PD, one FR and three FF (19 starts?! these guys were crazy not to start him more). Rhodes like Revis was immediatly put to work at safety and got his first INT against who else but Bryon Leftwich.

From then on Kerry Rhodes has seen everything from the leaving of Herm Edwards to the hiring of Eric Mangini to the 4-12 and then 10-6 seasons. Rhodes is a very loyal player (which makes you wonder if the Jets have something against Baker) and I expect Rhodes to continue to be the Jets defensive prize along with others such as Revis and Jenkins.

SS, Eric Smith: At Michigan State, Smith was awarded All-Conference honors in his senior year and the four year starter made 36 career starts and registered 323 tackles, including double figures in tackles 13, including 10.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, plus four INTs. Smith who was drafted by the Jets in 2006 has had two great season with New York abtaining 67 tackles and 2 INT in the last two years with the team. I expect Eric to be with the team for quite some time and I also believe he'll continue to rise and turn out to be a good Safety.

CB, Andre Woolfork: I'm doubting that Woolfork will be here long but since he is here now what better time than to at least get to know him. He was drafted in the 2003 draft by the Tennessee Titans and joined the Jets this year after not playing last year. In four seasons with Tennessee, Woolfolk played in 39 games and made 11 starts. He totaled 94 tackles, three interceptions, 18 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

S, Cameron Worrell: Cameron went undrafted in the 2003 draft and the Chicago Bears signed him as a undrafted free agent and also made his debut that same year. He has been with two teams before the Jets last year was with Miami where he had 56 tackles. Worrell will make a good addition to the team however I expect to see him playing a very limited role this year.

CB, Jonathan Zenon: New York signed Zenon as an undrafted free agent who was a part of the 08' draft .... During college Jonathan played for LSU and finished his career with 91 tackles, 9 interceptions (returning 3 for touchdown), and 25 pass deflections. Provided he isn't released, waived or taken off the roster like his teammate CB, Kenny Patton who was recently released, I believe Zenon would be a great addition to the Jets CB roster.

Zenon had a great college career and if he can take that into the NFL I believe he will be of use for New York for years to come and if Coleman works out, Zenon, Revis and Coleman are bound to be a big task for other teams. Knowing Mangini I expect to fade Zenon in slowly and if he looks good put him in along with the other guys so he can get a good feel for things.

    • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How long did it take you to come up with all of this. Here's the deal, we look great at DB. Rhodes, Revis, Elam, Smith, Coleman, Lowrey...come on baby. Try to throw on that this year. If we get our QB issue ironed out, I think our beloved J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS open a full case of whoopasssssssssss this year.
